Recently, I joined my local library, how freaking quaint. My penchant for reading is sending me broke (hello! Why so expensive?!) and I needed to marry my thirst for knowledge and saving a buck- enter the library.
The whole experience took me back to primary school- seriously my library still gives out laminated cards. So whilst Ms Library Lady was doing her official duties I got to meandering up and down the aisles.
I’d formed some kind of weird aversion to Elizabeth Gilbert (she of the Eat, Pray, Love fame). I have no idea why but I’m sure you all possess that weird female thing too, you know where you detest something for no apparent reason..or is that just me? However, I saw Big Magic, I thought why not?
She is a fantastic writer so I feel so dumb for having such a unnecessary beef with her- I’ve since reserved more of her books. Big Magic is really great for Creatives and those currently with creative blocks. It’s not as though she’s dishing up anything new here but she makes very valid reasons as to a lot of funny stuff people tend to do when they are trying to produce good work- mainly the fact that we procrastinate often and generally miss the opportunity of the “magic” (of the project) because we talk ourselves out of ever producing anything based around our fear.
It’s a nice easy read and well worth the time investment, especially if you are working on any creative type projects or have a leaning towards fear driven self loathing that inhibits your greatness.
Have you read it? What did you think?
