NZ Whey Protein Isolate Review
Recently, I came across the awesome products at Professional Whey, a quality online supplement store. Now usually with supplement companies they spend BIG dollars to get you to buy their products. We are talking flashy slogans, fitness models splashed across the screens and “scientific research” to tell you that their product is the best/number 1/going to get you lean. All sounds great in theory but the problem that a lot of fitness buffs gloss over is the quality. What is actually inside the product? No one seems to really care! “That fitness model looks hot and lean so I’ll drink it.” The problem with that is living the “clean eating” lifestyle you are simply undo-ing all that hard work by often consuming an inferior product. Yes you are helping the recovery process but it’s not optimal nutrition. So I decided to go straight to the source and chat to Stephen from Professional Whey and find out the in’s and out’s about his Whey Protein Isolate (WPI)
Nat: Why should we choose WPI?
PW: Most people choose WPI because its marketed more, costs more and has more protein.
Nat: So it seems, we are being “coaxed” into consuming WPI!
PW: Well in saying that, a solid reason to consume WPI is if you are a little lactose intolerant then WPC will not work for you as it has approximately 5 times the amount of lactose than WPI.
Also if you really do not want the extra calories from the fats and carbs or are more susceptible to hold water weight which the lactose can do to some. Finally because WPI has very little fat then it is perfect post workout, as it’s a little quicker than WPC and has more protein in it.

Nat: Is it worth the extra dollars?
PW: If you fit into one of the above categories, then yes.
Nat: When is it best consumed?
PW: Post workout and first thing in the morning. Pre workout is also fine i.e. 1-2 hours, however a solid wholefoods meal 1-2 hours with protein is better.
Nat: What results can we expect from using WPI?
Whey Protein Isolate is a complete whole protein made up of various smaller protein fractions. The proteins that form whey protein isolate have been shown time and time again to be one of the fastest digesting proteins, that enable are some the best building blocks to help repair and build lean
tissue. Those building blocks are Essential Amino Acids, especially the
BCAA’s variety. It is so quick because there is very little fat to slow it
down. This is why it has been so overwhelming associated with the bodybuilding market, however it can be used by anybody who just wants the recovery benefits that whey protein offers.
The body also utilises the sulphur like amino acids (i.e Cysteine,
Methionine) that are present in both WPC and WPI to increase glutathione
levels, which helps, increase immunity.
An exciting study published in 2009 in the Journal of Nutrition
protein increased the activity of white blood cells. Whey protein also
increased levels of the antioxidant superoxide dismutase and the ability of
neutrophils to consume foreign particles and pathogens. There are many

Nat: I’ve heard the NZ WPI is reducing in availability?
PW: Yes, there are many theories as to why but basically Fonterra (a large dairy company in NZ, similar to Dairy Farmers in Australia) who produce the only New Zealand WPI have decided not to sell in Australia anymore because their bottom line has been increased by selling their product to other suppliers in other countries….think Japan and China. This may change but nobody knows if or when. However as we knew this was coming, we stocked up and have enough NZ WPI to last us until the end of the year, then after that its fingers crossed.
Nat’s opinion: I’ve tried many protein powders before (as you can image!) and I also get approached to try many different protein powders. I have a few stipulations when it comes to the type I use:
        
              High protein quality
        Zero artificial sweeteners
           Minimal ingredients (low fillers)
           Great taste
 Hands down winner? Professional Whey WPI. I love both their natural and Choc Mint (it contains stevia, organic cacao and natural mint). Protein content comes in at 24g+, fat and carbs are low. I add fruit or cooked quinoa/dry oats (depending on my training schedule.) to my smoothies so I get my hit of carbs. The flavoured protein gets me through that afternoon time when the old chocolate monster wants to rear it’s ugly head. I get to have my sweet fix in the nicest possible way, low sugar way.
I mix both the natural and Choc Mint with water instead of milk. Thankfully, It tastes amazing, really creamy & pleasant! I prefer to use my blender (Protein, water and berries) to get a nice thick shake consistency but a shaker will do the job fine. Remember though, the natural protein is just that. There isn’t any sweetness/flavour to it, adding fruit, maca, organic vanilla  (available from Professional Whey) or a tsp of cacao will make it more pleasant or simply go for the stevia flavoured.
